First I look at the man at the table
then at the window of the beach café
still as a photo, white lines around the panes

holding my attention
so beautiful that I don't get bored -
the white! the light! the division of the plane!

I consulted the wisdom
of the internet: Why
are photos never boring?

and I got a doggerel of commonplaces
which ignore the marvel
the marvel of the world

In photos, news reports and holiday
snaps, I now see the background -
the world around us

Eerst kijk ik naar de man aan het tafeltje
dan naar het raam van het strandcafé
stil als een foto, witte lijnen om de ruiten

die mijn aandacht vasthouden
zo mooi dat het me niet verveelt -
het wit! het licht! de vlakverdeling!

Ik raadpleegde de wijsheid
van het internet: Waarom
zijn foto's nooit saai?

en kreeg gerijmelde gemeenplaatsen
die voorbijgaan aan het wonder
het wonder van de wereld

Op foto's, nieuwsreportages en vakantie-
kiekjes, zie ik nu de achtergrond -
de wereld om ons heen

Erst blicke ich auf den Mann am Tisch
dann auf das Fenster des Strandcafés
still wie ein Foto, weiße Linien um die Scheiben

die meine Aufmerksamkeit festhalten
so schön, dass ich mich nicht langweile -
das Weiß! das Licht! die Bildaufteilung!

Ich befragte die Weisheit
des Internets: Warum
werden Fotos nie langweilig?

und bekam eine Reimerei von Klischees
die das Wunder übergehen
das Wunder der Welt
