Zywa Waterland

From The Horse
a lot of digging has been done
right through the island
where the Eastern Canal now
runs, to Mound White

Further on, on the mainland
the canal passed through
the Big Lake
below the Border Ditch
diagonally through the pattern
of the Waterland

past Hollow Ditch and
the Flower Valley Country Road
to Waterland Dam, no further
did the confidence extend
The skeptics got their right
by refusing to contribute

and 200 years later it is clear:
the plan was not bold enough
for the course of history
that is constantly changing

Poem 5901
Amsterdam, 2026-02-18
On the north side of the IJ River, you find on Marken: lighthouse The Horse (Het Paard), the Oostervaart canal, Mound White (Wittewerf, the White family's mound), and in Waterland: the Big Lake (het Groote Meer), the Border Ditch (het Zwet), Hollow Ditch (Holysloot), the Flower Valley Country Road (Bloemendalergouw), and Waterland Dam (Durgerdam); here, from 1825 to 1828, the Goudriaan Canal was dug to open up the port of Amsterdam for larger ships; later, the dikes were shoveled back into the dry bed

Zywa On the Ame

The soil preserved signs
of thousands of years
of life at this site -

later, in the year 1000, a marshy
area with a terp on the Ame
Stream, the Aemestelle

as elsewhere in Europe
raised from an abbey
to reclaim the land

Houses were built
on huijes, a forest
of thin piles

as anchors in the peat, and
as an anchor of hope
and authority of the church:

the legend of the cog ship
carrying the bishop, his rescuer
and his dog

Zywa Comfort zones [2]

In the city there are many doors
that are open at night
to being awake
experiencing something together
across the threshold
no longer being an outsider

In the city there are many sidewalks
where people stand
and explore distant areas
with flexible words
questions and mental leaps
to become familiar with them

In the city there are many gardens
where children play, birds
whistle and all year round, flowers
attract bees and people
to come and feast
on the nectar of the day

of greenery, to boats and houses
with hollyhocks on the facades

Zywa Amsterdam, siltland by the Big Lake

The level is rising around
the islands of silt
in the swamp, the fishermen
see their world widening
Old streambeds are also filling up
The wetlands become accessible
by rivers from the mainland

It is a sucking void
a gate to the sea, a chance
for the peat farmers and the forest people
to start trading, to build
dikes, quays, a city
with a dam
in the middle

People are flowing over
from the prosperous villages
to the impoldered land
with the new port --
not an old core that hungrily
conquers the surrounding lands
but their colony

Zywa Owl To Ask

Here I laughed with the son
of the ferryman at the people
who don't believe in miracles
we had a beer and he pointed

me the way in the maze
of ditches and country roads
the windmills in the distance
beckoned me, but I was afraid

of getting lost and I longed
for a good bed
before I would kneel
in the Holy Site

Now it's a dead affair here
a miracle of nature
ivy overgrows the ground
the trees and the tombstones

but there are no roots growing
between the bones in the pit
on which I stand, only fungi
that have been living for centuries

There is no longer a ferry

in this well-arranged garden

what is important

we reach
for contact

we connect
we connect

greater than our time and abode

We carry out the art
the history that connects us
and always does continue where it ends

in which we can wander
between reality and ideals

the past and dreams of the future

Zywa Meditation in the Vondelpark

The grass is still wet
around my mat
early in the morning
in the Vondelpark

under the high dome
of vapour trails through
the blue sky above the city --
the space of my mind

My sense of reality crackles
fiercely through it, igniting
fuses in my head and
my feeling to be me

splinters for an indefinite period --
the remaining time
of «unknown»
is unknown

Zywa Springtime in Amsterdam

New Year, the beginning
of spring in Amsterdam
The air is soft, life

is lighter in the streets
carefree are my steps
white and pink

the fruit trees, with confetti
of New Year's Eve
in the gutter, red scrap ribbons

through the city, the body
in which I breathe and live
Everywhere the promise is budding

that it can be peace
when we are neighbours
and it is spring

in everyone's heart
street after street
a flourishing beginning

Zywa Here where I stand

I jump among the serious people
in front of the church, the café still closed
and I think even further back in time

In a late spring there was a ditch side here
yonder a mill, the ramparts and the crown
of the old Western

As if it were a thickly painted canvas
I wipe off layers of history
I expose peat diggers, see the wind

in the flowering swamp
over many seasons, everything flies
back into existence

Long hair of the mammoths
from the west, up to the ridge
on which human species tramp

It can be seen with a distant look
in the middle of the city
here where I stand

Zywa Sidewalk speech

Trolley cases on the quay, tourists
They belong to it when you live here
Thin John sitting straight on his bike
every morning three times around the block
in the afternoon on foot the other way around
And Mario the sidewalk speaker
with his dog. They belong to it

The children who jump cannonballs
next to party people in their sloop
We ourselves when we go on vacation
in airplanes every two minutes
low over the houses against the wind
The cyclists with their priority face
Ordinary people who are living here

The Americans in front of their café
on the corner, where believers sat
when the church with the tower was still there
Red Mia dutifully shuffling around
the litter bins which she keeps tidy
And neighbours arguing once again
They all belong to it

They live here, and everywhere
the world is maladjusted, so
I begin on the street, with myself
with them and with you: Hello!
A good day here
where we are at home and wish
that everything stays different

talking about the curiosities of their lives

There is a shortage of chairs
at the party by the river
where we celebrate our civilization
our definitions and good manners
of see, hear and speak no evil

Who still dares to stand up
now that winter is coming, to give
a warm hand, welcome, the party is over
long live life!

In the mirror of the bar little lights
are dancing colours around my face
I wash my hands of it
I'm not a little monkey that doesn't want to listen
feigning shame and laughing secretly

My hands must help and share
I want to take care of you, caress you
I want to experience together who we are

Zywa The Guardian Angel Café

Sweetheart, the earth is getting cold
we have to do something
take ourselves by the hand
The guides walk away

in different directions
guided by the wishes
of their followers, that's how

it always goes, whatever you think of it
If only there were guardian angels
with power, not the writers

who meet in this café
no, a Guardian Council
for presidents and scholars

who want to unload graphite powder
on the north pole, throw atomic bombs
upon it, or build a dam

in the Bering Strait, with pumps
on peaceful nuclear energy
finishing the job

Yet... all of us, we
must do it ourselves, guard each other
with wings of compassion and reason

You almost cycled on
en route in your mind
but somewhere on the edge
you did see me, standing here

gingerly we take
the frays of the past
feeling, would it be possible
to knot a nice bow out of it

I don't know what you wanted, then
maybe it was like you said
or did you long for more nonetheless?
You came too close to me

I live nearby

do you have time?

Zywa At het quay

There's a woman lying in the street. Why?
Some neighbours watch and so do I
One of them is pointing: there she stood
and then I understand the dented hood

Were there demons in her mind
which have settled up there on the fifth
where Sebastian and Isabel lived
until they vanished
in the jungle of Peru
and no one has a clue

Then, the beeping of the coots
What chain of incidents did precede?
Didn't anybody see her need
standing there, the city at her feet?

The shop was crowded
Spotlights on show-pieces
fancy coffee table books
and chic presents
for the season and the next holidays

Zywa Fight after the fight

Amsterdam! Free
man of the world you want to be

your wild eyes threaten
my father hand, please, send
an angel, light, a woman
a favourable wind, sweet dreams
someone, something to help you
unbreakable mirrors if need be

Father, mother, earth, universe
make something happen, of course
who sees everything, does not know why
to intervene

freedom would be meaningless
if for adults only

understanding and obedient
everything with measure, giving up
what is beautiful and attractive
and smiling
at the discontented excuses
and lies of the past

You grow up wounded
I too have built, defended
and then demolished
castles and walls -

old men's proud
of the scars of my fight

Zywa Jewel

I love Amsterdam at night
rows of narrow houses on the canal
lit windows, slow time
jewel of my loneliness

predictable daytime traffic
manoeuvering through logos and slogans
grumpy faces, professional smile
turning diagonally on steep sections

zigzag track from right to left
watch out, it causes accidents
attention, left is going, right is standing
flashing lights in the middle every now and then

like nothing is wrong
grab like crows in the poo
between garbage and inventory
ephemeral, a group on the sidewalk

familiar strange ordinary
fellow citizens where we live
quite easily next to each other
our contacts interchangeable

Amsterdam at night
narrow houses on the canal
lit windows, slow time
jewel of my loneliness

The evening sky,

colouring behind black twigs --

cut out very fine.

De avondhemelDer Abendhimmel,
kleurt achter zwarte takjes --rot hinter schwarzen Zweigen --

haarfijn uitgeknipt.fein ausgeschnitten.

Red light, while I wait,

all the cyclists are passing --

The woman beckons.

Ik sta voor rood licht,Ich stehe vor rot,
alle fietsers rijden door --die anderen fahren durch --

De vrouw wenkt naar mij.Die Frau winkt mich an.

Zywa Mesocosmos

The sky is blue and cold today
as if the atmosphere is thinner
and I can sense the void

under which the houses are small
and low, meaningless
fleeting and interchangeable

The old timber factory seems to be leaking
On the right side of the base
smoke rises from the building

as if a reversed draught
through the black chimney hole
absorbs, from distant stars, seas
of gigawatts of power for the city

Zywa Let me forget

Dark clouds in the sunset glow
there's an invisible death below

Amidst apartment blocks, I stroll
around and around a new black hole
of concentrated matter

A broken-winged cargo plane smashed
friends of friends of friends of mine

It is quiet after the blow
I want to hear what I don't want to know
and then kiss away the danger
be it with a stranger

Caress me, caress me, make me glory
for a night, let me forget this story
