Zywa Abstractions

Can I cross social boundaries
by being original and yet
be understood?

The distinctive exterior of
the originality of great artists
and the uniqueness of stars in the theatres
was and is easily noticed
but how superficially
is its humanity understood?

Sometimes poems become sayings
and often stars are imitated
The unique becomes commonplace
But do we experience the feelings
they express, or does it remain fiction?
Does it remain abstract?

Can I impose myself
with texts about myself
in order to be seen as I am?

Zywa See me

In the university cafeteria, I listened
to the conversations at the table
One of the students asked me questions

and he asked me along
I followed him, I wanted
a decision, a relationship

for the rest of my life
As an advance payment
I got used to his company

Every now and then, I showed
a tip of my thoughts
and I still try to make

him understand who I am
even though he would prefer
to see me as he imagined me

so I keep practising
to become stronger
than his resistance

Zywa Alone too much

Alone, alone, one is alone
too much, wasting time
longingly, I want

no people passing by
no boring vicissitudes
no daily uselessness

but interest
in my existence, in me
Yes, I do

want to live, to love
and to care and pass on
everything

that should not be lost
Yes, that's how it should be
Yet there's nothing that should be

and that's why
one has to be alone
alone too much

Poem 5690

Zywa Not in their image

Mother can continue to see me
as a daughter, but my brother
and my husband must want
to know me as I am

I need that
even if it's not true
because my fruitless striving
keeps me alive nonetheless

Walking and writing
in notebooks and letters
explanations of who I am

Book after book to refute
and to replace what they like
to think about me, to break
it down and nuance it

Word by word weighed
and considered and rejected
now for sale to strangers -
my kind, if they dare to be so

Zywa His hands rest in his eyes

Who will do it, who
will sketch who I am
not just any

woman with skin
and hair and a figure
eight, ten, like this, like that

but lifelike? The dreamer
perhaps, who is looking
around vaguely, letting

my image sink in before
he begins to draw; his hands rest
in his eyes, his look is soft

no searchlight
that bleaches me and lights up
less than it blinds

Zywa Fly in your attention

It feels famous, those sunglasses
against the guessing and hoping eyes
that warm you with attention

Yes, we watch, because we know
we are seen by you
we straighten our backs and laugh

We hear you, you like to talk
about love, about desires
and about me

that I seem to be ready
Yes, I really wanted
to believe that

and my body called
for redemption, but you took
my soul in return

Why was my age just a number
why did I think I could
fly in your attention?

You played with the words
Please Rescue Me
but I survived you

Zywa The wonderful feeling

The fog must have cleared
so slowly, that when
I saw the landscape
when I realised it

was there, I already must
have seen it unconsciously
just like when

I was bored, watching
the passing people
and thinking they also saw me
in passing, a girl

with dangling legs
just a girl
they do not know

and that I was her
This was suddenly clear
an awareness, loomed up
out of the mist of being a child

I too saw myself
sitting there in the wonderful
feeling that I was myself

Zywa Life forgets

Only noticed in a small circle
and even so
not quite for who you are

and what you are able to, almost unneeded
unfortunately that is common
Time keeps going by

and later, life forgets
everyone and everything that was known
and then there is no difference anymore

Celebrity is a lie
pinned on a beacon
It does not matter

but sometimes you sit around doing nothing
and you feel that it is a pity
for your children, your friends and society

that you're not of more importance
or leave behind more
Time keeps going by

and life forgets what has been

Zywa Palace of Art

I entered the display case
of people educators
subsidising snobs
the multi-rich and companies

among tourists and inhabitants
who want to be seen
in the museum café and
with sophisticated pastry lard
the conversation with careless clauses

they quote from an authority
whom nobody has to understand
to get the intention
of the praised artists

The shop was crowded
Spotlights on show-pieces
fancy coffee table books
and chic presents
for the season and the next holidays

Especially the past
is on sale, postcards
of the attractions
and sights of the city

interchangeable
like the collections
which graduated stylists
cast in international moulds
to magnets for visitors
