Zywa The neighbour's dog

After those first years, they
took him in for a second term
and now he barks a lot more

Okay, we're not unwilling
neighbours and throw him
a ball

Oh dear, he already has it
and with a lot of noise, he forces
us to give in to him again

He gets bored easily
and can't stand
being ignored, so

we take turns dressing up
in our best clothes
to serve as ball boys

In between, the dog bites
a few people on the legs
and poops wherever he pleases

Zywa Pay for oppression

Not living for later
but together, social
and respected

The king loathes it
He takes palaces and farmsteads
His taxation breaks

the compliance, cold
causes hunger
Threat of war

Propaganda points the way:
there is a saviour, a Father
of the Nation, he protects

the refugees from Antwerp
and the trade, he will
drive out tyranny

that beheads dukes and puts
believers at the stake, that makes
the country pay for the oppression

Zywa The night is over

Just in time, order has been restored
but it has cost me many soldiers
What a night, the men are exhausted
They hope and wish it's over
but the day breaks, now

the execution, the exhibition
of the king and his commanders
What a sight he is
in his expensive clothes
with a diagonal bandage

around his head as a royal crown
stumbling through the narrow streets
Today the cheers are mine, with the wailing
of the women and the elderly
the horror on everyone's face:

What have they done? Is it really him?

Zywa Silent investigation

The bell, an unexpected visit:
a gentleman who asks me

to come along, I have to
I am arrested

but only for further investigation
Please don't make it any worse!

At the office, I get a seat
Please wait here, then it will

be fine, it takes time
You do understand, don't you?

Accuracy is required and you are
not the only one. I wish that was true!

We get food, just enough
in our own stench, silently

arguing around
the growing puddle of urine

over the rotting mattresses
a soft bed of worms

from the breathtaking poop barrel
It seems we've been quietly forgotten

Sometimes someone whispers
if he dares and faces

the angry glances of fear
of caning, so as not to get crazy

Zywa I am not like that

The doorbell rings, an unexpected visitor
Dad is afraid and does not want to open
The man at the door asks me

to come with him for further investigation
You must come, he says, there is no choice
Don't you make it worse than it is!

Dad, dad, why? Where
will they take me? Whatever they say
I didn't do it, I am not like that

The guards are silent, my heart runs
away from my legs, but it is not far:
three blocks away they leave me behind

in a large mansion, I am saved
the housekeeper says it too
as long as you stay within these walls

Here, the research is at a standstill
You get nice clothes and
the yeoman is a tender lover

He loves pretty girls, sixteen
you are, be happy and do as he says

Two long sleepless nights

Mr. Investigating Judge lies in me
He loves sixteen pretty girls
locked up in his house two by two

Dad, mama, I disappeared, fortunately
you don't know anything about all
I have done, because I am not like that

Zywa I feel the shadow

Not frank and free
in an open field of fire
but as a guerilla
hostilely hidden
in everyday life

I feel it, the shadow
and I imagine right away
to make the thrower controll-
able, it's an elephant
without legs, a whale

hovering menacingly
over me, not a Zeppelin
with science fiction technology
not Big Brother disguised
as phones and cash desks

but private deputies
who, from all corners
patiently play the begirding
game to conquer the world
for concealed gods

Zywa What are you still doing here?

People avoid me
I'm on a list
and get mail, at home
you are not safe

it says, what are you still
     doing here, do you
     need help packing?

I get a call:
Look outside
we are at your door

with enough boxes
Count your days and watch
your children, stupid quail
it is over
with wet-my-lips
     and it does not help
     to play dead
     Mau-mau, maybe
     God sends an angel
     of insight
     and compassion

Poem 1018
Amsterdam, 2017-02-14
The quail is said to be stupid, because it can be lured with a whistle
