Poem H3938 Amsterdam, 2023-07-08 The Good Apprentice (Iris Murdoch) - 1985 Novel, chapter 1, part 5 Collection: Stall Tribute to: Murdoch, Iris
My cynical life:
realistic, but boring --
and very tiring.
Ik leefde cynisch:
Ich lebte zynisch:
heel realistisch, maar saai --
realistisch, langweilig --
en heel vermoeiend.
und sehr ermüdend.

Beware of people
who cheer you along the way --
like vanes in the wind.
Pas op voor mensen
Hüte dich vor den
die jou staan toe te juichen:
Menschen die dir zujubeln --
vanen in de wind.
wie Fahnen im Wind.

Roses and sweat
Under the table, no one
gets in the way with giant shoes
my world can exist there --
until dinner
the houses, roads and construction projects
with all the thoughts of the people
I can read and answer --
with new plans
In the summer there are tables in the garden
with clips on the long cloths
swaying in the light of the wind --
my tent after dinner
which was small and dark at first
full of adults' legs
but cheerful with their voices --
my other world
I stroke the dry grass
clear ways for the ants
and breathe the strange air --
of roses and sweat

Romantic suns
People want to believe in their own
importance, continue to shine
after their death, also
they like to dream to be
elsewhere than where they are
and they hope for better
and for love, that holy
story that makes beautiful
what their unbridled lust is doing
Oh, Faith, Hope, and Love
are romantic poems
suns of happiness if you like
or fictions if you dare to live
without Grace and privileges
that you keep for yourself
because everything is for everyone
but what you have received
you don't have to give?
