They're shooting again,

that's not as dangerous as --

a deathly silence.

Ah, ze schieten weer,Sie schießen wieder,
dat is niet zo gevaarlijk --das ist nicht so gefährlich --

als doodse stilte.wie Totenstille.

Zywa Bullyboy

The Bullyboy charges forward
like a bull, horns forward -
a Goliath, whose spear is stronger
than the stone in the hands
of his opponent

He does not see his own weakness
does not know his own values

and does not believe in the lessons
of the futile past struggle
of many great powers
against the small countries
they despise

He is blind, but not insensitive
to the tragedy that clings to him

Have pity
on the citizens and the soldiers
under the yoke of rulers
who reject treaties
and do not tolerate wisdom

Zywa The flat world [Misconceptions]

In 1935, the future was flat
Order was on the verge of collapse
in families, shops, and factories

In parliaments and cafés
there was a lot of heated talking
at first with everyone, soon
only with like-minded people

Illusions and misconceptions
abounded, citizens grouped
against each other, clashed

Orators sought conflicts and wrong
national borders, made themselves bigger
at the expense of perceived enemies
were on their way to glory and power

States were not to be trusted
There was a need to arm
a need to fight

But war cannot bring peace
only destruction
and sorrow, many long years
until the country is exhausted

Zywa Trench-coat

I approach the enemy
and hide until dark

I dig in, at night
I creep around
in my trench-coat

to level the terrain
for a surprise attack
at an opportune moment

Fighting sleep
I stand in the ditch, biting
the tip of my tongue

and peering into the distance
My insignia grace
my shoulder flaps

Zywa Snake-charmer

Temple officials have the land
They made it great, but now they let it
fall, into pieces of their own; my friends
are way too expensive friends

Out of caution father gave me
away after my nursing years
to Egypt, the temple in the delta

and when the dynasty seemed lost
because the Ethiopians advanced
the priests thought they were smart
in appointing me as the army commander

But I took the sacred birds
with me in baskets, in the desert
they bit the vipers at our feet to death

We surprised the enemy in his sleep
hit him in its naked flanks
and we have won; the temple
cobras arose again
